Welcome to the inaugural edition of As We Understand Him (AWUH) writings.

We are excited to embark on this new trek and glad you joined us.

In this post, we will address some threads that make up the fabric of our purpose for existing as a podcast and digital presence.

First and foremost; We broadcast and write because we deeply desire others to find the comfort and peace we have seen in our relationship with the God of the Bible. We are simply two guys thirsty to learn, grow and serve.

We are neither theologians nor Doctor of Divinity. We are just two guys on a spiritual path wide enough for others to join. So, we welcome you to join us as we attempt to figure out this God thing.

Our Origins

We (Mike and Glenn) met in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), where we shared a common goal of sobriety. We quickly learned that we were spiritually at similar places and realized that one plus one could equal three, so we joined hips on the spiritual trail.

We started a podcast focused on sobriety (sober.coffee) in April of 2021 and have been blessed to experience the testimonials of support that the podcast has meant to many.

We felt called to a natural extension, a venue that allowed the community to expand and grow in the spiritual realm they found themselves in as a result of a divinely based program of AA.

As of this writing, we are unsure if this mission will last six months or six years. So, as we say, we are just taking it one episode at a time.

The Name

The program of AA talks to a generic higher power in its quest to be inclusive. AA’s literature suggests that members choose a greater power- of their understanding. The exact phrase is “God as we understand him.”

There are 14 references to the supernatural in the “How it (sobriety) Works” section read at most AA meetings.

We are inviting members of the AA community to learn more about God that we understand (or are learning about), which is the God of the Bible.

The Logo

Corporate America spends time and effort in creating its brand and logos. AWUH invested brainpower into its representation as well:

The coffee shop theme represents our podcast focusing on the word “God.” The reason for the “? “ is that there are many questions to be answered for us. We aim to ask and answer questions as we move closer to our author. The stains represent the sin and shortcomings of our past and present.

The solidness and the steadiness of the cup and coffee represent the solid footing of our greater power; the God of the Bible.

The Song

Music moves us. It is an integral part of our life and spiritual journey.

As with sober.coffee, we chose a U2 song as our anthem. “With or without you” represents a love song to our savior, Jesus Christ. The song’s drive is our appeal, reminding us to move forward as sitting on the sidelines keeps us from the intensity and rewards of the game. Its lyrics remind us of a God that will move forward “with or without” us but will “wait” for us as a father waits on a son.

Coming from a place where we had “nothing left to lose”, we had barely survived “the storm,” and we longed to cry that we “give it all” while knowing that our creator “wants more.”

So, we “give ourselves away” in the podcast and these writings.

Production note: We have chosen the Imagine Dragons version and are grateful that they are letting us borrow this song of praise.

Profitability Matrix

Every venture has a “return on investment,” right? To be clear, no financial model supports any of our ministry endeavors. Mike and Glenn are sole (soul) financial supporters of AWUH and realize no material gain. Instead, our rewards are found in the help we can provide others on their spiritual trip.

The Process

We plan on a weekly drop of the podcast and new additions to the writings at least once a week. The podcast and blog will drop weekly on Sundays at 4:00 AM Central Standard Time.

The podcast and the writings will be affiliated with a resource room, and some background that can be found at www.asweunderstandhim.coffee.

Sessions can be heard on all podcast platforms as well as YouTube.

As we understand Him can also be found on Instagram at @asweunderstandhimpodcast

The Prayer

We pray that others will join us along this journey and that we will learn together through writing, reading, listening, and sharing. We pray each member of our “community” finds the comfort and peace promised in the written Bible. We pray for guidance through prayer and meditation; that our product is a true representation of our loving God.
